Weekly Recommendations (28/2)

Updated: May 11, 2023

Hi everyone! It’s been not that long since Valentine’s Day, and I’m still in that corny, cheesy, lovey-dovey romantic mood: so I thought I would recommend things that are about love and the state of being in love. Here are some of my favourite books, albums, movies/tv shows, podcasts, games and Youtube channels.

Books:

You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle

This book is cheesy, dramatic and funny- a perfect combination that makes this a read you can’t put down! The main character views her fiance as her nemesis, but is there more lurking beneath the surface of his smirk? We get an exaggerated look at what it takes to make a marriage work, and the effort that goes into maintaining a connection.

Albums:

LOVE ALL SERVE ALL by Fujii Kaze

This Japanese singer-songwriter never fails to deliver, and LOVE ALL SERVE ALL is just one of his amazing works. The lyrics of upbeat songs like まつり (Matsuri) talk about the exhilaration of breaking free and being able to love. The album takes a darker tone, however, with the song ロンリーラプソディ(Lonely Rhapsody), describing the misunderstandings and tragedy in a crumbling relationship. All these ideas about love are summed up in Kaze’s beautiful tunes.

Movies/TV Shows:

Titanic (1997)

This iconic adaption never fails to impress and amaze: I urge everyone to watch it at least once. I kid you not, tears were spilling from my eyes at the end of my first watch. Jack and Rose’s love story transcends generations, leaving you genuinely rooting for their love and survival at the end of the movie. It doesn’t hurt that young Leonardo DiCaprio looks pretty good here too.

Podcasts:

Dangerously Yours by Classic Radio Shows on Spotify

Dangerously Yours was a collection of love stories broadcasted in 1944 by Vicks; each episode starred Victor Jory as its leading voice actor. These stories span love in espionage, love in poverty and love within nobility. The brilliant voice acting used in this podcast brings stories to life, though you’ll have to strain your ears a little to hear all parts of the dialogue.

Games:

Stardew Valley by ConcernedApe

In this game, you’ll be able to lavish all the love in your heart onto cultivating your own little farm! This farming simulator allows you to make cash off growing plants, unlocking storylines and chatting to villagers: each scene is meticulously crafted and full of authenticity. Within the game, you’ll be able to date several bachelors and bachelorettes to obtain rewards. Its charming pixelated graphics will steal away your time, as you’ll be too hooked to stop for a second.

Youtube Channels:

Sisyphus 55

This Youtuber’s haphazard doodles hold a lot of heart, detailing philosophical topics with impressive complexity. I especially like his older videos like ‘for her’, ‘how we think of love is messed up’, ‘i love you’, and ‘last night i was dreaming and i fell in love’. These videos cover the entire emotional spectrum of loving someone, and carries painful relatability about the reality of heartbreak.

Happy consuming!
