2026 IS THE NEW 2016

If you’ve been on social media at all recently, you’ll know that 2026 is being branded as the “new 2016”. Snapchat dog filters, grainy images, and Lush Life have been taking over our feeds since January, but have you ever wondered why? Why is everybody romanticizing 2016, an era that most of us can barely even remember?

This obsession with 2016 is more than just a trend. It’s a collective escape from a world that feels stuck in a loop of political drama and AI Love Island. For us, 2016 was the last year things felt actually normal, back when digital culture was genuinely playful. It’s a 2026 remix of the past for anyone who is tired of the filtered perfection and ready for something that feels real again. So to honour this revival, here are some of the most popular fashion trends from 2016 that might be coming back this year.

Indie Sleaze

In 2016, early Gen-Z and late Millennial Caucasian fashion was obsessed with a very specific kind of edge. We’re talking about the prime of chokers, skinny jeans, and bomber jackets. While the 2010s version was often about being as aesthetic as possible for a Tumblr post, the 2026 revival is more about playing with proportions.

Instead of the super tight, restricted looks from a decade ago, we’re seeing a shift towards elevated grunge. People are pairing those classic 2016 staples with oversized blazers, heavy trench coats, or tall boots. It keeps the grit of the original style but gives it a more modern, structured contour that feels right for today.

Athleisure

2016 was also the year that athleisure truly went mainstream. Back then, it was all about the classic Adidas track pants and looking like you were always on your way to a dance rehearsal. Fast forward to today, and that sporty look has returned with a modern twist.

Over the past few years, this trend has evolved into something called blockette, which is a mix of feminine details and sportswear. For example, styling a jersey with a mini skirt has become extremely popular. It’s not uncommon to see people wearing the iconic three-stripe track pants with a lace trimmed top or hair ribbons. It’s a nod to the 2016 “active” lifestyle, but updated to prioritize contrast as opposed to looking gym ready.

Ultimately, the new 2016 isn’t just about wearing a bomber jacket to look vintage. It’s about the desire for playfulness. In a world where fashion can sometimes feel too serious or plain, looking back at 2016 reminds us that style is supposed to be fun!

Whether you’re digging through the back of your dad’s closet for a baseball cap, or experimenting with extreme layers for the first time, the 2016 comeback is about more than just a recycled aesthetic. It’s taking the best parts of the past and making them work for who we are right now. This trend proves that you don’t have to stay within the boxes of nostalgia or modern style…you can stay right in the middle, where the past is simply the blueprint for the people we’re becoming. We’re reclaiming a style that says fashion should be a more light-hearted way to express ourselves.
