Weekly Recommendations (7/3)

Valerie Law

This week’s recommendations centre around being grateful and appreciating what you have.

Hello everyone! In case you’ve missed it, Kindness Week has been going on, but no matter whether it's Kindness Week or not, it's always the right time to be grateful for those around you - I like to think that everyday is Kindness day. As people, we often only truly appreciate what we have once it's gone, so I thought that this week’s recommendations could serve as a lighthearted reminder to be thankful! Below are some things that help you take a pause in your hectic lives, look around you, and be grateful for all that you have.

Book:

Wonder

By R. J. Palacio

Many of you may have already read this book back in your primary years, but the message carried within is truly one that exceeds time. Focusing on kindness and appreciation for life, ‘Wonder’ describes the life of a boy born with a genetic syndrome, and the difficulties he overcomes regarding stereotypes and exclusion by those around him, when he goes to middle school. This book will remind you that everyone is different, and that being kind and accepting can go a long way.

Song:

What A Wonderful World

By Louis Armstrong

An oldie but a goodie for sure. Aside from revolutionising jazz music, this timeless masterpiece is confirmed to bring a smile to your face. Everything from the simple laid back jazz tune of the song, Armstrong’s bright, never-failing grin, to the heartwarming lyrics, will allow you to take a pause, look around, and appreciate the beauty of life. This song talks about the wondrous little things around you, and how it isn’t the world that is bad, but what we are doing to it. So take a little today to spread some kindness, give this world a chance, and marvel at trees of green.

Movie:

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower

(2012)

A movie about high school students, their individual challenges, and how they cope with them, The Perks Of Being A Wallflower centres around kindness and inclusivity, by revealing the positive effects of being accepted and accepting, as well as the pain some might go through when excluded from society. The power of friendship and support is thoroughly explored within the movie, and shows just how much your kindness can possibly help someone else.

YouTube Channel:

@randomactsofkindness

This You Tube channel explores kindness within society, as well as producing educational videos behind the science of kindness. There are different tips and tricks on how to start being kind every day, and you might learn a thing or two about kindness itself! With videos in the forms of doodles and short documentaries, this channel can give you a refreshing break from this hectic world, and allow you to ponder about how you can be kind to yourself and others today.

Happy kindness day!
