Most of the time, we’re all trying to find ways to fit in with the crowd. But on March 18th, 6 speakers decided to take the stage and shatter that mold. For the 3rd annual TEDxKGV event, our theme was ‘Breaking The Frame’. Rather than staying within their comfort zone, we prompted our speakers to challenge the community in deconstructing conventional thinking and make room for revolutionary ideas. Our diverse line up of student and alumni speakers enraptured the audience with intriguing ideas, bringing a sparkle to every listener’s eyes.
This year, we were honored to host two esteemed alumni speakers, ex-F1 mechanic David McKirdy and legendary musician and actor Anders Nelsson, who spoke about chasing dreams with an open mind and how rebellion can bring about a fulfilling life. Not to be outdone, our student speakers brought equally remarkable ideas to
the stage, whether it was Scarlett Chan’s stirring talk on how

skateboarding can teach us to rethink failure, Nathaniel Wong’s unique perspective on parenting, Julius Zhu’s brave recounting of his recovery journey through psychosis, or Krishanaa Mahtani’s inspiring reflection on the power of unspoken history. It was truly something special to see graduates of KGV from over 50 years ago sharing the same stage as our current students.
As one of the organizing directors of this year’s event and a speaker at the first iteration, it brings me so much pride to see how TEDxKGV has grown in these three years. Of course, we could not have pulled it off without the 8 months of dedication from our entire organizing team, to whom I’m incredibly grateful. This year, I’m most proud of our student speakers, many of which are new to public speaking, yet still gave their all throughout their TEDx journey. Unlike previous years, this year’s speakers are all in the
younger years, and it provided us with a unique challenge to give each speaker the personalized support they needed in their preparation. When things got tough, it was often the thought of how deserving these ideas are of being shared that kept me going.

Although this year’s event has ended, I hope that the talks spark conversations far beyond the school hall. If you missed it, don’t worry! Keep an eye out for the video recordings of each talk, which will be posted on the official TEDx YouTube channel in the following months. Follow us on Instagram at @tedxkgvschool to stay up to date!
I can’t wait for what next year’s TEDxKGV event will bring us, and if you’re interested in getting involved in any way, whether it’s in a leadership role, as a team member or potential speaker, feel free to email me at leer17@kgv.hk
