A Midsummer Night at the Y11 Formal

The Year 11 Formal was truly a night of individuality and style, following the theme of “Midsummer Nights”. Everyone arrived in flashy suits and jaw-dropping dresses; each outfit stood out and made the room feel unique and special. Stepping inside, it was impossible not to notice the decorations: balloons blanketed the floor, and the tables were packed with foods such as pizza, chicken nuggets, and fries.
At the back of the hall, the photobooth was one of the busiest spots of the night, with a line stretching towards the entrance. For many people, it was the highlight of the evening as you could print as many photos as you wanted, and it was like being able to make memories on demand. A range of different props and filters gave everyone a chance to get creative, every flash turning poses into memories.
As the night progressed, the atmosphere only got louder. Two student bands performed, alongside a solo singer, before the DJ booth took over at the front of the stage, blasting hit Marshmallow and Alan Walker songs like “Faded” and “Alone.” The hall pulsed and thumped as the crowd danced, jumped and moved as one. Lasers rained through the air while the flashing lights created a hypnotic effect, so much so that the energy spilled into mosh pits, making the whole room feel electric and loud.

The entertainment didn’t slow down as the night went on. A magic show and stand-up comedy sent cards flickering through the air, and audience members left amazed at the mind-reading tricks. The comedy show had the crowd participating in knock-knock jokes, and laughter united the year throughout the set. Additionally, different awards were announced, ranging from sub-categories of who’s most likely to get IB 45 to who’s most likely to win the Hunger Games and of course, “Formal Queen” and “Formal King.”
The experience of jumping up and down with my friends in heels surrounded by hazy lights and constant music was truly unforgettable. Even with exams coming up, all our worries flew out the window, and it was like a breath of fresh air: a moment to forget stress and celebrate instead. When the last song played and the night concluded, an excess of pizza and canned drinks waited for students who would finish the celebration later. Outside, the driveway was filled with students making Instagram reels, snapping photos and finishing off their formal transitions before making it back home, where I’m sure the excitement of the night kept many people awake and dreaming.
